What is CBD Oil?

CBD comes from industrial hemp. It’s a health superstar, packing a wide range of benefits, “Get you high” like THC. Humans and animals naturally produce cannabinoids in their bodies. These are called “endocannabinoids.” Because of this, CBD works naturally with the body’s systems.

CBD oil helps “tune-up” the body’s endocannabinoid system.  It supercharges it to perform at its best- reducing pain, calming anxiety, and keeping the body healthy.

How is Cannabidiol Different From Marijuana?

CBD comes from a “cousin” of the marijuana plant, called hemp. CBD is one of the hundreds of components of marijuana. But CBD, or cannabidiol, does not create a mind-altering state.

CBD is not addictive to people or animals, according to the World Health Organization. In humans, there is no potential for abuse or dependence on CBD, the WHO concluded.

Legal CBD products, including all those sold at CBD Remedies, contain less than .03 percent THC, the psychoactive part of marijuana. It's important to note that CBD comes from hemp and not marijuana, according to the American Kennel Club.

What Are the Benefits of Cannabis Oil for Dogs?

Exciting new studies reveal 10 ways CBD can keep your pet tongue-wagging and healthy.

1. Relieves Chronic Pain/Arthritis

In a groundbreaking new study on dogs with arthritis by Cornell University, "80 percent of the dogs taking CBD oil showed significant improvement in pain levels and quality of life," Forbes magazine writes.

The study added that there were no noticeable side effects from the CBD. The dogs had arthritis pain, and CBD eased the symptoms. In other animal studies, CBD reduced pain and inflammation from arthritis and aided in sleep, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

CBD was effective in treating arthritis of the knee, said Dr. Daniel Clauw, a professor at the University of Michigan. “It appears as though it is very safe,” he added. “Nearly all potential side effects of cannabinoids are from THC, not CBD.”

2. Treats Seizures and Epilepsy

Another recent study showed that 89 percent of dogs who took CBD in a clinical trial had fewer seizures. Dr. Stephanie McGrath, a neurologist at Colorado State University’s veterinary hospital, did the study on dogs with epilepsy.

Most drugs used to treat epilepsy have serious side effects. This is not true of CBD. McGrath said the results with CBD "seem very promising".

3. Boosts Appetite

Dogs with poor appetite may have everything from teeth problems to pain. Your canine friend can’t tell you what’s wrong, so a visit to the vet is in order. If you can’t fix the underlying problem- like the fact that appetite decreases with age- then CBD can be an effective appetite stimulant, according to PetMD.

This site is created by vets who know their business. “The benefits (of CBD) include reduction of pain and increase in appetite,” according to the site.

4. Reduces Anxiety

If your dog is panting a lot, having separation issues, or bolts at loud noises, your furry friend may have anxiety. Dogs have an endocannabinoid system similar to humans that normally calms anxiety. But sometimes, we all need an extra boost to stay mentally fit.

Studies by the U.S. National Institute of Health show that CBD reduces anxiety, including social anxiety, in humans. A study in Brazil showed that CBD helps with panic disorders. And according to Dogs Naturally magazine, CBD helps dogs in a similar way.

Dogs can be stressed out by life situations, like loud fireworks. Or, they may have general anxiety that shows in their behaviors, like shaking or licking their lips. CBD can calm your dog by reducing the nerve signals to the brain that trigger anxiety.

5.Helps With Cancer

Serious diseases like cancer should always be treated by a veterinarian. After consulting with your vet, CBD can help with cancer symptoms such as pain and anxiety. There are also indications in animal studies that CBD can help your pet battle the disease.

CBD can inhibit some types of cancer cell growth, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It can supplement cancer treatment by helping the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells, the NIH writes.

6. CBD Can Help with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Dogs, like people, can suffer from inflamed intestines that are very painful. Symptoms like diarrhea may embarrass your dog and create a mess for you. Animal studies by the National Institutes of Health show that CBD can help control this distressing inflammation.

In layman’s terms, CBD helps restore balance to the intestinal tract. The NIH called CBD “a promising therapeutic agent” that brings harmony to the neuro-immune axis. This makes CBD a prime new tool in treating IBS.

7. Reduces Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases

One of CBD’s most powerful roles is to reduce inflammation. The human body has CB1and CB2 receptors in the immune system- tailor-made for CBD, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Inflammation can be an over-reaction of the immune system that CBD helps regulate. It “turns down the volume” on inflammation, which is linked to pain and auto-immune disease.

8. CBD Can Protect the Nervous System and Help With

Neurodegenerative Diseases CBD is a neuroprotective antioxidant with remarkable health effects, according to studies by the NIH reported in the New York Times. In other words, it helps protect the brain from damage over time.

Oxidation of brain cells is a damaging process that happens in many neurological disorders, according to the New York Times. When there is an injury, cannabinoids produced by the body rush to the defense. They reduce inflammation and repair damage. A CBD supplement can help with this process.

9. CBD Helps Reduce Nausea

Nausea and vomiting in humans and other animals is regulated by the endocannabinoid system. CBD reduces these symptoms in a wide variety of animals, according to the National Institutes of Health. It suppresses vomiting and may be especially helpful in reducing nausea of chemotherapy patients.

10. CBD Promotes Cardiovascular Health

Animal studies show that CBD has a direct effect on arteries. It protects against damage caused by sugars and reduces inflammation. It’s a powerful anti-oxidant which is great for heart health.

It can help with cardiomyopathy, clumping of platelets, and stress-induced problems with the blood vessels. Taken together this appears to support a positive role for CBD and the heart, according to the NIH.
